Kolkata is the epitome of the culture, literature, and heritage of India. Every building in Kolkata tells us a story. It tells us the story of the city’s past. The city has witnessed too many changes year after year. Though the redevelopment of the city sweeps off the past, the walls of the historical buildings, the narrow lanes of the city, and the paintings of the past don’t let us forget the bitter past. The city has witnessed many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the sake of independence. Their belongings and the story of their struggles are still preserved in the Indian Museum of Kolkata. Several structures made by the British during the pre-independence era still stand strong which gives the city the power to boast of its heritage. Many visitors across the country and the world come to the city of joy to explore the architectural heritage of Kolkata. Sovabazar Rajbari is another historical heritage building that many people come to visit especially during Durga Puja. It is one of the oldest royal houses in Bengal. Any visit to Kolkata is incomplete if one has not visited Jorasanko Thakurbari, the birthplace of Kabiguru Rabindranath Thakur. His belongings, handwritten letters, and so on are all preserved in his house and acquire a big part of India’s heritage. Victoria Memorial was built during British rule in the memory of Queen Victoria for her keen devotion to 25 years of rule over India. It not only bears the testimony of British rule but also stands out as an example of exceptional architecture and advancement. The first ever three-storied building in Kolkata called the Writers’ Building is one of the best examples of historical buildings in Kolkata. It is named after being the residence of junior writers that were a part of the East India Company. It is the place where all official documents of the Government are archived. Another stupendous building was established in Kolkata in the year 1836 called the National Library. It was opened for students from underprivileged backgrounds to have access to free books for a particular period.
